Financial/ Corporate Apocalypse
The economy is a major point of concern for most American's these days. People are struggling to make ends meet, and the cost of living is forever increasing. Financial meltdowns are a real thing, and are very concerning. The chaos that ensued after Bernie Madoff's "Ponzi Scheme" collapsed affected the lives of thousands, and had a ripple affect throughout the economy. Major businesses and banks are filing for bankruptcy left and right, and people are losing jobs as a result. The world runs on money. Without money we are essentially powerless. Money, thus, controls us, as do corporations. There are many films that criticize the enormous powers that corporations and capitalism has over us, and threaten to collapse the entire foundation we have built our country upon. Some of these films are:
- The Island
- Minority Report
- Total Recall
- Fight Club
Not quite yet a film, but in the works, is a screen adaptation of Don DeLillo's "Cosmopolis" an excellent book describing the financial frenzy that has taken over our world, and Wall Street in particular. The main character, Eric Packer, has an insane, suicidal thirst for knowledge, money, and technology, which leads him to his own financial collapse and demise.
